Some 256 participants came together online at the ENI CBC Plastic Busters CAP e-course on marine litter monitoring and mitigation, held on the 17th and 19th of January 2023. The e-course, organized by MIO-ECSDE and UNISI with the support of the EU funded “Water and Environment Support (WES) in the ENI Neighbourhood South Region” project, sought to create the enabling conditions for a societal shift towards the wise use and sustainable disposal of plastics.

The e-course received unprecedented attention from all over the world; some 390 marine litter practitioners registered to attend, coming from almost all EuroMediterranean countries as well as from Argentine, Australia, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Somalia, South Korea, Sudan, Sri Lanka, United States of America, Yemen.

On the 17th of January 2023, the e-course focused on monitoring approaches to assess the presence and effects on marine litter; all state-of-the-art monitoring methodologies were featured, while the Plastic Busters threefold monitoring approach aiming to assess the impact of marine litter on biota was put in the spotlight.

On 19th of January 2023, presentations were dedicated to the operationalization of marine litter prevention and mitigation actions and participants had the opportunity to exchange know-how with marine litter practitioners that have actually put in motion measures addressing both sea-based and land-based sources of marine litter and also learned about the most common marine litter related myths and misconceptions.

Through dynamic and interactive sessions throughout the e-course, participants discussed thoroughly different aspects of the marine litter issue and repeatedly expressed their gratitude for the high quality of the e-course.
