MARLISCO’s curtain fell with a standing ovation at the European Maritime Day 2015!
MARLISCO really went out with a bang at the European Maritime Day held this year in Athens, from 28 to 31 May 2015. The European Maritime Day 2015 conference attracted a record number of participants, some 1300, from the European maritime community, who came together to discuss this year’s theme ‘Ports and Coasts as Engines for Blue Growth’.
MIO-ECSDE at the MICRO2015
Within the framework of the DeFishGear project, the MICRO2015 seminar was organized on 4-6 May 2015, at the Marine Biology Station, Piran, Slovenia. The event attracted 82 participants from 10 countries. Six renown scientists, Francois GALGANI, Gijsbert TWEEHUYSEN, Christian LAFORSCH, Hrissi KARAPANAGIOTI, Maria Christina FOSSI and MIO-ECSDE Programme Officer Thomais VLACHOGIANNI, contributed invited talks.
Making a market for marine litter a European opportunity for blue growth
The Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) and the ECNC Group together with MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles), Aquafil and Nofir held an workshop at the European Maritime Day 2015 entitled “Innovative business models for marine litter in Europe”.
MIO-ECSDE views and experiences feed into the UfM panel discussions on marine litter
On the 27th of June 2015 MIO-ECSDE participated in the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) stakeholders conference entitled “Towards a Roadmap for Blue Investment and Jobs in the Mediterranean” held in Athens.
Winter 2015 results of a transborder marine macrolitter survey in the Adriatic-Ionian Sea
Due to the basin shape and the high demographic pressure of the surrounding countries, the Adriatic Sea can be considered at risk for the amount of marine litter that enters the marine waters both from land and sea activities. For this reason, and within the framework of the IPA Adriatic funded DeFishGear project, MIO-ECSDE and the Accademia del Leviatano have undertaken a year-long monitoring action on the abundance, composition and distribution of marine macrolitter (items greater than 20cm) that floats in high sea waters between the Adriatic and the Ionian sea.
Environmental NGOs display solidarity in SW Balkans: sharing experiences & lessons learned for the protection of freshwater ecosystems in the region
The Act4Drin project brought to the town of Lin, Albania, on the shore of Lake Ohrid, some 28 representatives from 18 environmental NGOs active in the SW Balkans (28-29 April 2015). Everyone engaged in a collective and collaborative learning process on integrated water resources management and freshwater biodiversity conservation in transboundary settings.
