MIO-ECSDE/MEdIES, supported the co-organistion of a High-Level Event of Education and Environment Ministers on the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development and its Action Plan towards 2030 on the 6th of October in the framework of the 9th Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference in Nicosia, Cyprus (5-7 October 2022).

The high-level event offered the opportunity to 55 participants – among them Ministers and High-Level officials, academia as well as representatives of IGOs and NGOs – to share, reflect and harvest insights regarding their activities, in line with the implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD (MSESD). The MSESD and its revised Action Plan towards 2030 were unanimously adopted.

The event also approved a Statement referring to what was agreed during the meeting, the adoption of the Action Plan towards 2030, and the Mediterranean Committee on ESD that will be guided by a new Bureau consisting of the Ministries of Education of Cyprus (Chair), Greece, Lebanon, Morocco and Palestine and UNEP/MAP, UNESCO, UNECE, UfM and the League of Arab States.

The event was officially opened by HE the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth of Cyprus and Chairman of the MCESD, Mr. Prodromos Prodromou, while it was addressed by the MCESD members, and namely, Mr. Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the UfM, Ms Ana Luiza M. Thompson-Flores, Director, UNESCO Liaison Office in Geneva, Ms Tatjana Hema, UNEP/MAP Coordinator, and Dr. Farraj Alajami, Minister Plenipotentiary/Director of Education and Scientific Research Department, LAS. All of them reaffirmed their commitment to promote ESD in the region as a most safe tool and effective investment for the development and the promotion of sustainable development and the achievement of the SDGs.

The revision of the Action plan:

  • It started in early 2021 and included targeted communication and exchange with competent stakeholders and a series of actions to collect and compile the necessary evidence and feedback.
  • Between June and September 2022 MIO-ECSDE / MEdIES facilitated the Secretariat of the Mediterranean Committee on Education for Sustainable Development (MCESD) in the preparation of the revised texts that were shared with the Ministries of Education of the Mediterranean countries and the IGOs participating in the MCESD, to receive comments and feedback.
  • The revised text was adopted during the High-Level Event of the Mediterranean Education and Environment Ministers.
