After a long period without physical meetings of the Circle, many members of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (COMPSUD) met again in person for the 15th meeting of the Circle since its establishment in 2002 at the Johannesburg Works Summit on Sustainable Development. It took place within the framework of the Mediterranean Stakeholder Forum on Environment and Climate Action, held in Cairo on 21–23 October 2025, where more than 170 parliamentarians, NGOs and CSOs, journalists, youth and women’s organisations, and other regional actors from 21 countries across the Mediterranean.
Today the Circle counts 33 active members from Albania, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Malta, Jordan, Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia and Spain, and there is an open invitation for worthy new MPs that are genuinely committed to achieving a sustainable development in the Mediterranean. COMPSUD is an open, flexible and light structure, aiming to promote suitable mechanisms to support dialogue among Members of Parliament from EU and non-EU Mediterranean countries, politicians, and other stakeholders on the protection of the Mediterranean environment and the necessary socio-economic conditions for peace and sustainable development.
The synthesis of the Board of COMPSUD for the November 2025 – November 2027 biennium is now complete and is as follows: Ms Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou (Greece – Chairperson), Ms Randa Alkhouz (Jordan), Dr. Najat Saliba (Lebanon), Mr Agustín Almodóvar Barceló (Spain), Dr. Fadhel Ben, Tourkia (Tunisia).
Cairo-based member of COMPSUD Ms Noha A. Zaki represented the Circle at the 24th Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP24) to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and its Protocols (Barcelona Convention), held in December 2025.
At COP24, the Ministers approved the renewal of COMPSUD’s mandate as a member of the Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development (MCSD) for another two-year term. As a reminder, the MCSD is the regional body that oversees the implementation of the revised Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD-2026-2035).
