For all areas of the European Green Deal to succeed and meet their ambitious targets, behavioural change is required, along with long-term commitment, trust, social acceptance and buy-in from people, communities and organisations. Such changes include how we choose to be mobile, behave as consumers, contribute to protecting or restoring biodiversity, etc.
MIO-ECSDE is part of a €5 million European research project, entitled Social sciences & Humanities for Achieving a Responsible, Equitable and Desirable GREEN DEAL (SHARED GREEN DEAL) aiming to build a transnational network of policy stakeholders to shed light on the social and human factors necessary for achieving responsible and fair implementation of the European Green Deal.
The five-year SHARED GREEN DEAL project, funded by the EU’s Horizon2020 scheme, kicked-off on 1 February 2022. Led by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), the project brings together 22 leading organisations including 9 universities, 2 research institutions, 8 network organisations and 2 SMEs that will examine the role social sciences can play in helping countries and neighborhoods from across the EU to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions as part of the European Green Deal. The partners cover core elements of the European Green Deal cross-cutting priorities such as civil society, democracy, gender, energy, environment, circular economy, and innovation.
Much of the recent focus on tackling climate change has centered on green technology development. SHARED GREEN DEAL, however, will involve 24 separate ‘social experiments’ delivered across different countries to help residents and allow leading scientists and local organisations to develop knowledge in support of further implementation around 6 priority topics of the European Green Deal: Clean Energy, Circular Economy, Efficient Renovations, Sustainable Mobility, Sustainable Food and Preserving Biodiversity.
The pledge that no person or place is left behind during the transition to a low carbon society is a key part of the European Green Deal, and diversity and inclusivity will be at the heart of SHARED GREEN DEAL to ensure disadvantaged and vulnerable social groups are supported as the changes take place.
MIO-ECSDE, by bringing in its experience in the research-policy-society interface, in advocacy, networking, awareness-raising and Education for Sustainable Development, will be leading the social experiments on preserving biodiversity and will also help draw out of the project experiments insights on zero pollution. It goes without saying that MIO-ECSDE will also contribute to scoping tasks, support the dissemination and communication activities, etc.
