The Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles (MEDASSET) recently celebrated the premiere of the LIFE MareNatura project’s documentary Protecting Marine Life in a Changing World. It builds on MEDASSET’s ongoing work in the project on advancing marine conservation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Directed by Italian filmmaker and marine biologist Roberto Lo Monaco and produced by MEDASSET, the 47-minute documentary presents the intensity and diversity of scientific research with breathtaking cinematic quality. From monitoring seabirds and collecting genetic samples to capturing rare underwater footage of marine mammals, the scientists’ testimonies illuminate the hidden stories of the sea. The film underscores the ongoing struggle to safeguard our shared blue heritage in a captivating way.

The documentary premiered on 13 November at the Institut Français de Grèce in Athens. After the screening, a lively and insightful discussion took place, bringing together the public and the creative team. Participants exchanged reflections on the future of marine biodiversity, the difficulties of conservation work, and the meaningful opportunities that emerge when science, storytelling, and community action meet. The dialogue revealed not only concern for the Mediterranean’s future but also a shared sense of optimism rooted in collective effort.

After its premiere, the documentary will now tour international competitive film festivals before being released to the general public.
