TEMA Foundation, a member of MIO-ECSDE based in Türkiye, has launched Slow Death, a striking documentary that exposes the long-term environmental and public health impacts of coal-fired power plants in the Afşin-Elbistan region.

The documentary emerged from TEMA Foundation’s initial effort to document the ecological devastation caused by thermal power plants operating on the Elbistan Plain, once one of Türkiye’s most fertile agricultural areas. Filmed in towns neighbouring the Afşin-Elbistan coal power plant, the documentary records ash pollution, local testimonies, and challenges faced by residents. Communities face rising cancer rates, respiratory illnesses, vanishing water sources, and collapsing agricultural productivity.

Directed by İlkay Nişancı and produced by the company behind Türkiye’s most awarded documentary of last year, Slow Death is designed to reach a wide audience through special screenings at leading national film festivals.

TEMA Foundation participated in the Mediterranean Stakeholder Forum on Environment and Climate Action“Making the Behavioural Shift Happen: NGOs/CSOs, Parliamentarians, Journalists, Women and Youth Organisations, and Other Actors Meet”, held in Cairo from 21 to 23 October, where the documentary was screened.
